I create images that take on symbolic characteristics. These images have an emphasis on color. When color is juxtaposed it can create a powerful contrast. The colors represent both positive and negative space, which can be parallel to human emotions. What we see is not always what is. Heightening the intensity and sometimes merging the colors can cause an uneasiness that motivates expressions.
Is a picture worth a thousand words? Cirlot, the author of The Dictionary of Symbols, states, “The unique function of a symbol is that it is the language of image and emotions.” Kandinsky states, “Color is the power which directly influences the soul.” Josef Abers, Ellsworth Kelly, Jules Olitski, Kenneth Noland, Frank Stella, Newman and Morris Louis investigated abstraction and the effect of color. They discovered multiple interpretations of the same hue depending on the colors surrounding it. Pollock. Van Gogh, Rothko and Mondrian all were also compelled by color, as am I. As an art therapist as well as an artist I have always been amazed at what powers of communication symbols and color have, depending on how they are combined and presented.
One of my intentions for creating art is to unite the symbolic images with the colors expressing a unique coding that ejects information.
